The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Habit 1~Be Proactive "Habit 1 is the key to unlocking all the other habits and that's why it comes first. It says, "I am the captain of my life. I can choose my attitude. I'm responsible for my own happiness or unhappiness. I am in the driver's seat of my destiny, not just a passenger." To be proactive, is to finally take charge in your life. It's when you finally show yourself that you're able to be active and productive at the same time. You want to make yourself more involved. Don't waste your time thinking of stuff that you can do, but actually take the first step and do it. That's what this first habit is about. An example of being proactive would be that I have the whole weekend to do what i desire. I give myself two options. Option 1, Slouch around all day and do nothing but stay home.
